ruining september
September 25, 2002 05:12 AM
I don't think I've paused even a second this month to say yes, it's September. Not in that affirmative way, at least.
This isn't one hundred percent true. I did make a couple of swishy passes at a new look for this site after an epiphany about how great my life was. They featured pomegranates and will likely never see daylight. I have eyes on greater things.
What I haven't done is paused long enough to write it down, I suppose.
And maybe that's a good thing.
In any case, it's September. It's almost over. It's been unseasonably warm and overpoliticized and I find it hard to accept that we've actually been on a forward trajectory.
Time is, after all, much stretchier than our calendars are prepared to allow.
Couldn't the news media have waited a week? Couldn't they have given me at least until Labor Day to enjoy the month arriving? It feels like treason to love September now.
But I did get in some nice subway rides in the rain, a little gallivanting with big dogs and a secondhand backyard grill we've yet to put together and turn on.
Next year, we take back September. By force if we must.
