sisterhood lyrics
July 1, 2002 10:09 AM
when I was twelve years old i was no sister then and i was afraid, like you are when you're too young to know the time, and you point, you have a word for every woman you can lay your eyes on, pointing me in a crooked line
i will not be the others, i am the others there's more than one answer to these questions girl, you're so naive and you're too young to understand that's not your fault, that's just your turn an old fashioned girl, gonna get dated
is that all there is? if that's all there is, my friends, then let's keep dancing she's already won
wake up, wake up, wake up right now take her hand and grow and grow and grow she will give us hell, give us dreams lead you through the fire give you back hope she cradled us she held us in her arms she said it's time i open my eyes don't be afraid to open your eyes maybe she's right why can't we come together we have not solved everything
o sisters let's go down, let's go down, come on down, pigtails and all girls when they fall waiting for somebody else to understand maybe you'll leave the light on just in just in case i like the dancing i can remember where i come from people are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered but i owe much to the nameless and all those surrogates those who're singin' my life back to me you know my momma wouldn't have it any other way culture is what we make it yes it is now is the time to invent
This entry is brought to you by On Display and We Have Brains.
It's not that I'm trying to start some tradition of doing these two collaborative entries as one [slackass!]. Rather, I was thinking about the question I had posted and I needed to write something for On Display that wasn't a nostalgic melody of all the songs I loved before; the requirement was that the entry must be comprised of lyrics only.
So. This entry contains only lyrics (barring the paragraphs of explanation). It's essentially a poem about remembering whom you owe and forgiving the women before you who may have screwed up some tiny things, but also paved the way for you to live your amazingly fabulous life. The [all female] artists from whom these lyrics were gratefully ganked are: Indigo Girls, Neko Case, P J Harvey, Sleater Kinney, Gillian Welch, Dar Williams, Tori Amos, The Roches, Caitlin Cary, K's Choice and Sarah Mclachlan. Thanks, ladies.
